Chef Renata
aka István Szapolyai
Good afternoon, good afternoon!
How are you?
Who I am?
Don't you recognize me?
I am Szapolyai István, I've been standing in the main square of Cluj-Napoca for 119 years, or maybe more, but it doesn't matter. As far as I know, I was born in 1434 and died around 1499. But when someone asks me when I died, I always answer that I didn’t die, how could I be dead when I’ve been standing here for almost 120 years?
I was a very rich noble, I served King Mátyás during his Austrian conquests. First as a captain, then as a general and governor. I think the most interesting thing about me is that I owned 72 castles and demesne lands at the time of my death. I had a son, János Szapolyai, who became King of Hungary until his death.
If you pass by the Mátyás statue, think of my story! Bye-bye!
